How straw bales form the walls
The BaleWorks walls are made from densely packed straw bales held within modular timber frames. The bales came from a farm in upstate New York, and the installation was built for BuildFest 2026.[1]
What the structure is for
BaleWorks begins as a campground shelter and performance stage. Its designers also propose adapting the structure into a restroom in a later phase.[1]
The plan for weathered straw
Cornell’s October 29, 2026 report does not explain how the old straw would be used to treat the soil. The walls already exist; replacing the bales and reusing the straw remain plans.[1]
- Built: straw bales fill interior walls within modular timber frames.
- Initial use: a campground shelter and performance stage. A restroom is proposed for a later phase.
- Planned for the straw: replace weathered bales with fresh ones and reuse the old straw for soil remediation.
Cornell reports no measured result from the proposed soil reuse.
