Physical activity is more than sport
WHO defines physical activity as bodily movement that uses energy. It includes movement during work, transport, leisure and domestic activities; examples range from walking and wheeling to cycling and play.[1]
WHO says some physical activity is better than none and that all physical activity counts. Activities differ in intensity, though, so a household task is not necessarily equivalent to a workout or a complete activity programme.[1]
Notice what you already do
Think back over an ordinary day. You might have folded laundry while seated or moved from one room to another. The questions below offer an optional way to notice a comfortable movement that fits your routine.
- When did you already move your body today?
- Was there a movement that felt comfortable and manageable?
- Where might one of those moments fit tomorrow?
See whether it fits your day
Consider whether the moment you have in mind would fit even on a busy day and feel comfortable for you, rather than comparing totals. If you have received clinical advice about restricted movement, follow it.
If you like, leave yourself a short reminder for tomorrow, such as: ‘Fold laundry after breakfast.’
